The God of Encouragement – Matthew 17:1-13

Introduction

There is a difference between encouragement and exhortation.  When I am trying to get to you come get in line with me to the rollercoaster ride, that is exhortation.  Convincing you to do something “good” that you are not already doing.  Once you get in line with me, my telling you it was a good choice and that it is all going to be o.k. is encouragement…congratulating you on a choice already made.
The experience of the transfiguration is a study in encouragement for every character involved.
  • The Disciples: “You made the right choice.” – When we have chosen to follow Christ, God finds critical moments along the way to affirm that decision, erasing our doubts.
  • Jesus: “You’re on the right path.” – When we look ahead and see painful things coming, God has a way of assuring us that He will be with us, encouraging us to keep going.
  • Moses, Elijah: “You made a difference.” – We may not see in this lifetime the ripple effect of our obedience, but one day in the distant future we will have this encouragement.

The Difference it Makes – He is a God of encouragement, knowing exactly when and how we need a word or an experience which will keep us moving toward Him.
