The Purpose-Driven Death – Matthew 26:26-30; 27:11-50
Introduction
Sometimes, when I look back at my journey through some season, it reminds me of the old Family Circus cartoons that show the aimless meandering (represented by a dotted line through the house) of one of the children in that comic getting from point A to point B. If I don’t have my purpose firmly in mind, I am easily distracted and make poor decisions about next steps. Jesus’ journey through the crucifixion demonstrated for us what real purpose looks like and how it can get us through difficult circumstances.
- Memorializing the Purpose – Living (or dying) with purpose means taking time to memorialize those moments and/or ideals which further or fulfill that purpose.
- Using the Negative Space – Having a purpose helps us not only know what to say and do, but also when NOT to speak or act at all.
- Even the Small Things Fall into Place – His last moments, His last words, His last breath all pointed to Jesus’ purpose. Having a clear purpose changes how we see even the small things in our day.
The Difference it Makes – Jesus didn’t just teach us our purpose; He demonstrated for us how to live it out all the way through His death on the cross.
