Tradition over humanity

Jesus points out to the Pharisees and all at the dinner the obvious flaw in their argument regarding healing on the Sabbath.  The deeper issue is how they/we have allowed these types of “traditions” to do think for them/us.

What are the traditions or doctrines that stand in the way of you loving as Jesus loved?

Last is the new first

Once again Jesus advocates that we not seek to exalt ourselves.  Rather, we should put ourselves at the bottom of the heap.

How does this concept work?  Can it then become false humility or self-deprecation?

Everyone’s invited

Jesus is consistent with his message that all are included in God’s ultimate design.  There is also a very clear message for those who have refused the invitation.

Are we attentive to the invitation of the Lord, and are we living as though others are invited as well?

When my Christian testimony is more about rules by which to live than about a relationship in which to live, I stop being an effective witness for Christ.

The Church was never meant to be the community’s moral watchdog, telling lost people how they should live; rather, its purpose has always been to be a house of prayer, a place of healing, and a signpost pointing to Christ.

In the church, we must exalt Christ and celebrate what he has done for us and through us rather than exalting ourselves and emphasizing our own accomplishments.

Learning to see others through God’s eyes instead of through the lens our culture uses is an important part of being the church.

No matter who you are, no matter your accomplishments nor your standing in society, the only thing which can make you worthy of Heaven is having Jesus as the Lord of your life.  Once you leave this world, there in nothing else that will matter.
